Getting Around There are very few conventional taxis in Pattaya. Most tourists travel around in"Baht buses" . These are basically open backed pick up trucks with a canopy roof over the load area which has narrow padded benches down each side.
Thepthip Mansion is not on the normal Baht Bus route so you can either use the bike taxis which are right outside or if you don't mind a 10 minute wait send a bike to the top of the road to bring a Baht Bus down to you,or if you really want to live dangerously go direct on the motorcycle taxis!
In Pattaya or Jomtien Thais (or asian looking people) on Baht buses pay 5 baht, white people (Farang) pay 10 baht for short trips down the road. Some westerners feel aggrieved (it's the principle not the amount,10 baht = 15p uk or 10 c US), and simply hand over 5 baht. If you want to do this, recommended advice is to press the stop button a few metres beyond the soi you wish to descend at, pay the driver his 5 baht, say nothing and walk away. Do not look back. Walk towards the soi you want. The beach road and second road are one way. It's rare the driver will challenge you. For longer trips you need to haggle before you get on board - 60 to 80 baht is plenty from Thepthip to Pattaya and 40 to 60 baht for Jomtien. The Baht Buses go round a circuit...second road and Beach road...or Jomtien to Pattaya this is a one way system. If you want to go anywhere else stop an empty one and negotiate. You can sit inside if his wife isn't with him, and they are useful for shopping and transporting larger items. There is no public transport in Pattaya in the western sense. The "baht bus" operates a monopoly system. You can always walk its a great way to get to know the place but if doing so on the main road always face the oncoming traffic and be careful there is no such concept as public liability so any medical costs are down to you. Never trust the Zebra crossings they are just there for fun no vehicle will ever consider stopping at one for a pedestrian in fact it seems they are only there to get rid of the last of the road marking paint! Whatever you do DO NOT HIRE A CAR as any accident WILL be your fault and you will be liable for all medical costs and repairs. 3 people per day are killed on the roads of Pattaya alone and the only road rule is that there are no rules!
